In this era when one in six couples is said to be infertility, the medical technology and the attitude toward infertility continue to advance day by day. This column “The Door for trying to conceive” introduces the knowledge, treatment, trends of infertility and fertility. In the first episode, we would like to talk about "eggs" that affects the pregnancy or infertility.
A female egg meets up with a male sperm to form a fertilized egg, which implants in the endometrium and finally establishes "pregnancy". It is a well-known fact, but do you know how many chances in your life you get pregnant?
All Eggs for a lifetime are produced during the fetal period, and a female has about 7 million eggs at around the 20th week of fetus, which peaks and rapidly decreases. She has about 2 million eggs at her birth, about 300,000 eggs at her puberty. And then the number of her eggs have been decreasing at the pace of about 1000 eggs per month, It is going to be 20,000 to 30,000 at age 35, about 1000 at age 45, and finally it approaches zero at her menopause. Almost females ovulate only one egg per month after their puberty when the menstruation begins. Therefore, the number of eggs ovulated in a lifetime is about 400 to 500.
When you hear just this number, you may feel to be unrelated to infertility, but it is not always all of the eggs ovulated once a month are good quality. As you might already be aware, the fact that a lifetime of eggs are produced during the fetal period means that some eggs are ovulated at her age of 20 are the eggs of 20 years-old quality, some eggs are ovulates at her age of 40 are the eggs of 40 years-old quality. This is the reason why it is said “The eggs are getting old.”
With aging, the number of eggs decreases, the possibility of genetic abnormalities increases, and the spiral of infertility occurs. It has been said that it is impossible to defy this fact, but in recent research, the innovative treatment "PRP” (platelet rich plasma) which is also adopted as a treatment for implantation failure at our clinic is effective for the ovarian rejuvenation. It seems to be effective for improving the egg quality, that’s why we are preparing to introduce it as a new treatment method.
That’s the way that people who want to get pregnant in the future can do now is to have an AMH test that can confirm ovarian reserve. It is very important to check the number of eggs remaining in your ovary and know the time left to get pregnant.
And the other way is "egg freezing". To preserve reproductive potential in women of reproductive age, It is the process in which good quality eggs are collected and cryopreserved ,and then fertilized with partner sperm later to achieve the pregnancy. It is an “insurance” for your future and family, and it is an amazing medical technology such a time capsule that allows you to choose that timing yourself. Next time, I would like to talk about this “egg freezing” that controls the future of women.
